The Dragonboating season is packed with new races and events in which to participate.
Please take a look at our Events throughout the year to see which events you would like to join:
British Dragonboat Association League (BDA)
Dates: April - September
The BDA National League is a series of dragonboat racing events organised by the British Dragonboat Racing Association over the summer season starting in April at venues throughout the UK. Each event has a regatta format, with qualifying rounds, repecharges, minor and major finals to determine overall placings at the event. Races are typically held over 200m and 500m distances.
All BDA Registered Crews are eligible to compete in the BDA National League. There are two divisions - Premier and Standard, plus an Under 18 Division. Points are won on placings at each National League event to determine the position of the crews in the League overall. 16 points are awarded to the first placed crew at each event, 15 for second, and so on, in each league for each crew that has raced.
A crew's placing at the end of the year is decided on the sum of the crew's best seven points results scored over the season (6 x 200m results and 5 x 500m results for 2011). A count back system is in place to determine an overall winner where there is a draw based on the best number of qualifying results.
For the past few years, Typhoon has had a team in both the Premier league and Standard league.
The BDA National Cup is a two day event held at the end of the season in September. All the crews that have competed during the season are invited to take part. Races are typically over 200m, 500m, and 1000m distances. There are races for Open, Mixed, Ladies and Under 18 crews. A round of heats determines which crews qualify for the Cup competition, and which go into the Plate or Bowl competition for runners-up.
Other Events in the Year
Typhoon is very excited to announce that, in addition to our regularly scheduled national league races hosted by the BDA, we will be participating in the following events during the year:
Henley Winter Series (7.5KM Distance)
Venue: Eyot Centre (Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire)
The Henley Winter Series (HWS) is the only winter dragonboating regatta event in the UK.
The Series comprises of 4 long distance time trials over a circular race course of approximately 7km, with a turn around an island at each end of the course. The turns and staggered start provide exciting racing for the crews and an unexpected spectacle for members of the public enjoying a peaceful Sunday morning stroll along the River Thames.
The national league may have finished, but luckily these winter events hosted by Henley Dragons between November and March will keep Typhoon in tip top shape and put our endurance to the test. Set in scenic Henley, HWS is a rewarding and challenging race; and one that every paddler should experience.
